A 19-year-old mother and three other people have been arrested in connection with the sale of a baby in Wales.The 15-day-old baby was born in Virgen de la Concha hospital in Zamora, Spain, to a 19-year-old Romanian woman, but suspicions were aroused after she told police the child had died. The new mother said this had happened during an operation in the UK because of a problem with an injured vein.
A statement released by the Spanish police said doubts had been cast on the story and checks were made as a result. Following various investigations whichinvolved international police co-operation under the Sirene Bureau, the whereabouts of the baby was discovered as well as the people suspected of being involved in the sale.
The baby was found in Cardiff Bay and police believe the infant was sold for between 3,000 (£2,203) and 15,000 (£11,000) euros.DNA tests are being carried out to determine the paternity of the child.
The 19-year-old mother has been arrested, together with a man and woman, both aged 26 and of Spanish nationality.
A police spokesman said the investigation remained open and they have not ruled out further arrests as they suspect more people were involved in the sale.
