Banker: How I ran N2bn illegal accounts for Maina

Give us evidence, ex-pension chief's lawyer

tells EFCC

A banker has told detectives how she ran five

accounts used to perpetrate a N2bilion pension

fraud in the Office of the Head of the Civil

Service of the Federation.

Former Pension Reform Task Team chief

Abdulrasheed Maina is wanted by the Economic

and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for the

alleged pension fraud.

The EFCC is probing Maina's alleged complicity

in the operation of the accounts, following the

confessions of Fidelity Bank Account Officer

Toyin Meseke.

Besides, Meseke is said to have told the EFCC

that Maina had been operating a safe deposit

box with the bank.

EFCC's investigators found that withdrawals

from the five accounts were usually channelled

through some bureaux de change to an account

in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The bureaux de change are JIEK BDC, West

Waves and Alnasara.

A document obtained by our correspondent

identified the accounts as Cluster Logistics,

Nafisatu Aliyu, Abdullahi Faizal, Kangolo and

Drew Investment.

Meseke spilled the beans on how the accounts

were managed by a suspected pension fraud

syndicate.

Meseke said: "I managed Nafisatu Aliyu, Cluster

Logistics and Abdullahi Faizal for Abdulrasheed

Maina as soon as his brother, Khalid Aliyu, left

the bank three years ago.

"Though all the three accounts do not carry

Abdulrasheed Maina's name but I carried out

instruction on the accounts for him as explained

to me by his brother that Abdulrasheed Maina

owns all funds in the accounts before he

resigned from the bank.

"He is not a signatory to the three accounts

mentioned. He usually called me on my phone

number -08057465698 – to carry out instruction

on all the three accounts.

"And he also sent e-mail instructions through his

email gajipeace@gmail.com to my personal

email freshicekiddy@yahoo.com to carry out

instructions. Thereafter, he would send

someone to the bank to give me a form of

regularisation on the transactions done on all the

three accounts.

"Sometimes when it is getting too late to

regularize, I would call to remind him and asked

me to come to his house in Kado to receive the

regularised cheques.

"Most time, precisely on two occasions, I

received the already signed regularised

cheques in an enveloped sealed at the gate of

his house.

"On 3/10/14, Abdulrasheed sent an instruction

to debit Cluster Logistics with the sum of N15,

870, 690 and credit to a Bureau De Change

account (JIEK BDC). This amount was converted

to US dollars for onward delivery to him. I don't

know, I cannot remember the USD equivalent.

"Also on May 2, 2014, Abdulrasheed Maina sent

a mail carrying instruction that the sum of N33,

880,000 be debited from the same Cluster

Logistics and transferred to a Bureau De

Change (West Waves). This was converted by

the BDC customer and delivered to him.

"He scanned and sent another instruction on

May 6, 2014 to me to debit Cluster Logistics with

N47, 500, 00 and credit to BDC Customer, West

Waves BDC who converted and sent to him.

"On the transaction that took place on July 3,

2015 in Abdullahi Faizal, he (Abdulrasheed

Maina) sent an e-mail that the account be

liquidated and converted to US dollars (USD).

So, I got a bureau de change customer to

convert the sum of N108million for him."

Regarding accounts opened in the names of

Kangolo and Drew Investment, Meseke added:

"I am not sure who the account officers are.

Sometimes last year, I got to know that

Abdulrasheed Maina owns these accounts. I

have never initiated any transaction on these

accounts."

Meseke also confirmed that Maina was

operating a safe deposit box with the bank.

She, however, said Maina has sole access to

the box.

She added: "As for the safe deposit box, I got to

know that Maina maintained a safe deposit box

after I joined in 2011 when he came to access

his box and that the box had been in existence

before I joined the bank in 2008. The last time I

saw him coming to access his box was in 2013

but I cannot remember the exact month."

Yesterday Maina's lawyer Mrs Esther Uzoma,

said: "We are waiting for the amended charges

which the EFCC said contained the allegations.

"The EFCC has been saying that Maina operated

slush accounts but they have not shown us any

evidence."

In a statement on Tuesday in Abuja she said:

"The EFCC should come clean on the matter of

my client, Dr. Abdulrasheed Maina. When I

appeared before His Lordship, Justice Kolawole

on July 21, I made it clear that the EFCC was yet

to file any charge as well as serve any

summons on Dr. Maina.

"It is trite law that you cannot say an accused is

on the run when there is no charge preferred

against him or any invitation extended to him.

"During the hearing for the bail application,

counsel to the EFCC, Mr. Rotimi Jacobs (SAN),

wanted the court to direct me to produce Maina

in court at the next sitting but I argued that there

are clear procedures, which the EFCC is familiar

with and should follow.

"Naturally, the court agreed with my submission

on the position of law. Therefore, it is misleading

for the EFCC in its statement of Monday to

mislead the public that there exists an order for

Maina to be produced in court when there is no

invitation extended to him let alone a charge

preferred against him by the commission.

Group donates drugs, food items to Kirikiri inmates

IT WAS a touching moment for Kirikiri inmates;

caregivers and visitors to the prison, when a

Lagos based Human Right Advocacy Group

'Crusade for Justice' (CFJ) recently donated

drugs and household items to the prisons.

The event, which revealed the despicable state

of the reformatory centre, also provided the

opportunity to highlight the impending dangers

in the clinic located in the prison compound that

is meant to attend to ailing inmates.

Apart from the high number of inmates, who

are supposed to use the clinic, (over 1000

inmates) the clinic received drugs last from the

government eight months ago.

The medical doctor of the prisons, Dr. Edward

Hemeson, who expressed worries over the

neglect and abandonment of the clinic by the

government and humanitarian agencies, called

for an urgent intervention to salvage the

situation.

He said, "We are now more of miracle workers

that medical workers. Government has not sent

us drugs since over eight months. We only get

relief from few individuals and donor agencies,

which is not enough to take care of the medical

needs of the inmates, who come up with one

form of sickness or the other on daily basis.

During the visit, the team spoke with over 40

inmates, many of them awaiting trial. In the list

were a man, who has been awaiting trial since

2004, and a 41-year-old inmate, who was

brought into the prison when he was 29 years in

2003.

Oshomole Goes after Ex Governor for alleged stealing of 31billion$

Edo State Government says it has uncovered $31 million allegedly siphoned from the coffers of the state during the administration of a former governor of the state.

At the end of the State’s Executive Council, SEC, yesterday, Commissioner for Information, Mr Louis Odion said: “There is the issue of a fraud that was discovered while turning our books. We found that the $31 million was fraudulently taken from state coffers under a past administration in state.

“The governor has directed the Attorney-General to commence legal action in that direction. So, in the coming days, the state government will take legal action to ensure that what was stolen from Edo State Government is recovered. When you convert $31 million to naira, it fetches you a whopping N7 billion. You can imagine what N7 billion will do in improving the human condition in Edo State.”

Odion said the $31 million which was stolen from the people of Edo State for the transaction was designed clearly for criminal purposes.

“This project was called Avrant Cement Company situated at Ekpe, near Ikpeshi in Akoko Edo Local Government Area.

“The company was supposed to produce cement to take advantage of the large scale deposit of limestone in that part of the state. The company was registered as Abat Cement Company Ltd and this company had three shareholders. The Abat Cement Company had 75% shares, Edo State Government had 15% shares and 10% shares were reserved for ‘other Nigerians’.

“Although Edo State Government was given only 15% share, 100% of the revenue invested in the company, $31 million, was taken from the account of Edo State Government. This money was withdrawn from the account of Edo State Government in defunct Afribank.

“As the money was withdrawn, construction of the company started and all the major structures were in place, 90% completed. Machines were installed but there was no other contribution from any other source for the construction and procurement of these equipments. So everything invested in that company came from Edo State Government.

“It is on record according to the shareholders agreement, those who claim to be first shareholders, Abat Holdings were given 75 million shares, representing 75%. The second share holders were given 10 % and the third share holder, the Edo State Government was given 15 million shares, representing 15%.

“The agreement was signed and a former governor signed on behalf of the shareholders. The fruit juice processing company in Ehor was established by the same administration. The cost of establishing that company was N368, 458,195 and was invested in this company by the Edo State Government.

“The company was owned 100% by the Edo State Government. The materials for the company were imported from England from a company at £310,000. The company was now sold, including the land and the three hectares pineapple farm which was also developed by the Ministry of Agriculture for N283.8 million.

“The company was completed and there was a test run. There was no reason to privatize it and it was sold out at a give-away price which only could have been influenced by criminal intentions. There is also the one at Ikpeshi, the Solid Mineral Processing Industry. This company which was also owned 100% by Edo State Government was established by the administration at N85 million.

“This company was sold to a company called Copex Solid Mineral Processing Company owned by the then Deputy Governor for N56 million.”

The commissioner said Governor Adams Oshiomhole asked him to convey his appreciation and gratitude to the people of Edo State as well as members of the private sector for their voluntary compliance with the Land Use Charge.

“He has asked me to single out Coca-Cola Bottling Company for voluntary compliance. I think we need to put this in context. Our challenge as a government is mounting. Every day, our citizens want government to intervene, they want schools to be built, they want roads reconstructed but the truth is t

Biafrans Are working For Jonthan-Trying To frustrate Buhari-Senator

The Senator representing the Kaduna Central Senatorial District at the National Assembly, Mallam Shehu Sani, has alleged that agitators for the realisation of Biafra, under the aegis of the Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra, are forces working for former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Speaking in Kaduna on Monday, Sani said the plot was to destabilise President Muhammadu Buhari-led government.

According to Sani, Biafra agitators were aggrieved that the former President they considered their own lost the 2015 presidential election and conceded defeat.

Sani insisted that the agitation was not the true reflection of the Igbo or the South-East people and that the future of the people of that zone was better guaranteed within a united Nigeria.

“The Igbos have made tremendous progress since after the civil war. They have recorded successes as businessmen, as entrepreneurs, as academics and as politicians.

“As long as we will realise the change agenda, entrench good governance and run an all-inclusive government, the Biafran agitation will naturally fizzle out.

“Nigerians must be patient enough with the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration,” Sani added.

I predicted the Russian plane crash – TB Joshua

The Synagogue Church Of All Nations, SCOAN, via its television

station, 'Emmanuel TV', has revealed that the founder of the religious

institution, TB Joshua, predicted the Russian plane crash.

It will be recalled that on Saturday, 31st October, no fewer than 224

persons were confirmed dead after a Russian plane crashed in Egypt.

The plane, which was carrying the passengers from the Egyptian resort

of Sharm el-Sheikh, crashed in Central Sinai, killing all of those on

board.

Consequently, after the plane crashed on Saturday, the SCOAN in its

usual manner announced that their founder, TB Joshua predicted the

crash.

Recalling the prophecy, it was disclosed via Emmanuel TV that on

Sunday 31st August 2014, TB Joshua had warned of an impending plane

crash involving Russia.

A clip on the YouTube channel 'Emmanuel TV', disclosed, "It will not

be between Ukraine and Russia this time but a close region, a

neighbouring region," he stated, "warning passenger planes to be

careful of the routes they take over such volatile areas. I am seeing

a full load of passengers crash again," TB Joshua declared.

The clip claimed the prophecy was established following the Russian

jet which tragically crashed on Saturday, while flying across the

Sinai Peninsula in Egypt en-route to St Petersburg, killing all 224 on

board.

"We pray for all those involved in this tragic incident, that God

would comfort and strengthen them in this difficult time," the clip on

the YouTube channel 'Emmanuel TV' concluded."

It was learnt that the women who pretended to be buying some items on Wednesday entered into the shop at the market and while one of the women approached the shop owner and negotiating the price of a bottle of wine, her accomplice dipped her hand into the drawer and removed N100,000.

According to an eyewitness, “She was about to walk away with the money when the shop owner who had seen her raised the alarm which attracted other traders,” the witness said.

The eyewitness further stated that traders, who noticed what had transpired, pounced on the two women and stripped them naked in the process.

The timely intervention of the police saved them from been lynched and the Police quickly whisked them away from the market.

Confirming the incident, the Dutse Divisional Police Officer, SP Hajiya Aisha Yusuf said the suspects have been charged to court.

Alfa kills friend to avoid paying N32, 000 debt

An Islamic cleric, Ali Mohammed, has confessed to killing a 32-year-old graduate of Business Administration, Olufunbi Lawal.

The suspect, who owed Olufunbi N32,000, said he killed the deceased in order to avoid paying the debt.

Mohammed said he arranged four other relatives, who killed him on Thursday on Olorunfemi Street, in the Oworonshoki area of Lagos State.

He said, “He (Olufunbi) sold a motorcycle to me for N40, 000 last month and I gave him N8, 000 with a promise to pay up before the end of October. But he kept disturbing me to give him his balance. I delayed in paying because the motorcycle developed some faults that also gulped the money I was to use to pay him.

“On that fateful day, I invited some of my relatives. We killed him in order to stop him from disturbing me.”

PUNCH Metro learnt that Olufunbi, a graduate of a Lagos polytechnic, left his shop to meet Mohammed to collect the money the latter was owing him for a motorcycle he (Olufunbi) sold to him.

As the 32-year-old entered his friend’s house on Thursday night, he was grabbed by a gang of five men led by Mohammed.

The men reportedly tied a rope around his neck before slamming an iron bar on his head, thereby breaking his skull.

Not done, the men chopped off his fingers and slashed his neck with a cutlass.

PUNCH Metro learnt that his corpse was dragged down from the three-storey building and thrown onto the roadside, where it was found on Friday morning.

A resident and close friend of the victim, Funke Nuberu, explained that Olufunbi and Mohammed had been friends for more than four years.

She explained that when Olufunbi’s landlady started demanding rent, he decided to turn to his friend to offset his debt, but the suspect asked for more time.

She said, “Olufunbi had a shop where he sold provisions. Ali (Mohammed) is a security guard on the street; he was employed to guard a renovated building that had been put up for sale by an insurance company.

“Olufunbi’s shop is adjacent to Ali’s house on Olorunfemi Street.

“Olufunbi usually closed his shop around 10pm. But he got a call around 8pm on that fateful day and asked one of his friends to look after the shop and that he would soon return.

“Around 10pm, he was not back and the landlady wanted to lock the gate, so the person looking after the shop came to inform me that Olufunbi had not returned.”

Nuberu said efforts to reach him on his telephone were abortive as it was later discovered that his handset was left in the shop.

She said the call log on the telephone was checked and it turned out that Mohammed was the last person the victim called.

Mohammed, when challenged, denied knowing his friend’s whereabouts.

“We challenged him that he was the last person that Olufunbi spoke with on the phone but he said Olufunbi called his old telephone line,” Nuberu added.

It was learnt that the victim’s family members reported the case at the Oworonsoki Police Division.

Charles Shittu, who claimed to have watched over the victim’s shop on Thursday, said he was going to make a statement at the station when information filtered in that a corpse had been found on an adjoining street.

He said it was identified as the 32-year-old.

A resident, Solomon Paul, said the blood dripping from the corpse was traced to the second floor of the building where Mohammed worked as a security guard.

He said, “There was blood from the ground floor to the top floor, so his corpse must have been dragged down after he was killed. We saw the clothes Mohammed wore the previous day, stained with blood. There was also a rope, which was used to tie his neck. The keys to his shop were on the ground.

“We found a crowbar which they used to hit his head and a cutlass that they also used to kill him.”

Paul said some old blood stains were also in the house, suggesting that criminal activities had been going on for some time in the house.

Mohammed was said to be a reputed muezzin in a mosque in the community.
